Arts & Music

While lawmakers continue to chip away at funding for school arts and music programs, the foundation is committed to finding resources to support and strengthen these crucial programs.

Arts & Music
The primary focus over the last year with the arts and music initiative for the Salt Lake Education Foundation has included many projects, from support of school plays to fine arts shows and competitions. A great example of the ongoing arts opportunities made available to students is the expanding UPlay Piano Outreach program. The strength of this program is found in the partnership with the University of Utah School of Music and Daynes Music Company. This program utilizes undergraduate and graduate students to provide piano instruction to at-risk students at Title I elementary schools within Salt Lake City School District. The focus of the program is to improve overall academic performance, social behavior, and develop a life-long skill. The first Title I site was Franklin Elementary School in 2007. Since then, an additional site at Newman Elementary School was created, and the Franklin program was relocated to Backman Elementary School. Most recently, in partnership with the University of Utah School of Music, funding was secured from the Sorenson Legacy Foundation to expand the program to Washington Elementary School.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the program at Washington Elementary School is providing approximately 75 students with 1 ½ hours of piano instruction each week for 32 weeks. The program has been so well received by the Washington Elementary community that there has been a waiting list from the very first day. Two graduate students from the School of Music oversee the program along with additional piano major volunteers being utilized to enhance the learning environment. The UPlay Piano Outreach program is a valuable example of how community resources can be used in the Salt Lake City School District. This program provides students with music and arts related learning opportunities that they might not have otherwise had the personal resources to attain. All three UPlay sites are flourishing! The Salt Lake Education Foundation will continue to seek resources to sustain these programs and expand to additional sites.
