Community Engagement Committee Under Consideration

The Board of Education explored creating a Community Engagement Committee to help shape decisions and gather feedback from families and community members. After reviewing how similar committees function in other districts, the board asked the Policy Subcommittee to identify possible next steps and to explore what policies would be needed to move forward.
 

Welcome, New Student Board Members!

The Board welcomed two new student board members for the 2026–27 school year: Samson Sciotto-Eggers (East High) and Bianka Chavez (West High). Their voices will help shape decisions across the district.

Construction Update: West and Highland High Schools + Solar Panels at Whittier and Bryant

Progress continues on the rebuilds of West and Highland High Schools. At West, crews are working on the foundation, and at Highland, site preparation is underway. The official groundbreaking for Highland High will take place on April 22. Solar panel installations were also completed in March at Whittier Elementary and Bryant Middle Schools, supporting the district’s commitment to energy efficiency and long-term savings.

Budget Update: Capital Projects and Debt Service

District leaders presented a review of the current and next year's Capital Projects Fund (which pays for building and renovation projects) and the Debt Service Fund (which manages bond payments).

State Legislation and Declining Enrollment Putting Pressure on District Budget

The Business Administrator shared the financial impact of recent legislative changes. Funding for various programs has been cut or eliminated. The Weighted Pupil Unit (WPU, or the amount of funding we get from the state for each student enrolled in our schools) increased, but declining enrollment means the district may actually receive less overall funding next year.

District Supervisory Changes

The Associate Superintendent presented two recommended supervisory changes:
  • The Assessment team would move under the Assessment and Evaluations Supervisor
  • The G-5 Administrator would report directly to the Associate Superintendent

SLCSE Requests Renewal of its Charter

The Board agreed to draft a five-year charter renewal for the Salt Lake Center for Science Education as a charter school serving students in grades 9-12. This renewal will be considered at the next board meeting. The possibility of expanding to include grades 6–8 may be considered next spring.

School Meal Prices May Increase for the First Time Since 2012

Due to rising food and labor costs and overall inflation, the district is considering its first meal price increase since 2012. In developing this proposal, the district prioritized maintaining students’ access to nutritious meals while minimizing the impact on families. Students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals will not be affected.  

The price increase may be voted on as part of the Consent Agenda at the May 5 board meeting. Community members may share feedback about the proposed increase with Board Members via email.
