Big Ideas for Our Youngest Learners
The Board discussed ways to expand early childhood programs through partnerships and donors. District staff will reach out to community and city partners to support the Board as they discuss possibilities and move the conversation forward.
Highland and West High School rebuilds are underway! At West High, crews are actively tying rebar and pouring footings, and a fabrication area has been established where wall sections can be made on site. At Highland, utility lines are being relocated in preparation for the installation of foundation footings. Buildings and Grounds director Isaac Astill also shared updates on Glendale Middle, Wasatch Elementary, Bryant Middle, Whittier Elementary, and the Rosslyn Heights Sports Complex. School construction updates are available on the district website.
The district is projecting a substantial deficit next year due to declining enrollment, inflationary cost increases, and reduced state and federal funding. The district will use strategic cuts and reserves to cover the shortfall. Leaders continue working to protect student learning while keeping the district on a solid financial footing.
The Board expressed support and confidence in the Salt Lake Center for Science Education (SLCSE) and approved a five-year charter extension that will extend through the 2030-31 school year.
Following the charter extension, the Board reviewed the building lease for the district-owned facility SLCSE uses at 1400 W. Goodwin Avenue. Board members offered feedback, and the lease will return for further discussion.
